Wheel and Deal
Wheel and Deal is another of the Wheeling moves mentioned a few weeks earlier.
Wheel and Deal is done from
- two-face lines or
- lines of 4, usually facing out.
To review, remember that
1) you don't let go of your partner's hand,
2) you move around a pivot point and
3) you end up facing the opposite direction.
For this move, the pivot point for each couple is the center (inside) dancer.
From two-face liness
Each couple takes a step forward and wheels toward the center of the original line with the center dancer acting as the pivot point. Ends with both couples facing each other.
From lines
The left-hand couple takes a step forward and both couples wheel toward the center of the original line with the inside dancer acting as the pivot point. Ends with the left-hand couple in front of the other couple, both facing the center of the square.
It's hard to figure out who is the left-hand couple in the heat of the battle so here's an easy way to work it out (learned this from caller Paul Adams).
In a normal line of four. the center boy is "Mr Lucky". Mr Lucky is lucky for two reasons.
- he has a girl on each arm, and
- he takes the shorter route into the center
So Mr Lucky lowers his left shoulder into the center of the line and "pulls" (gently) his partner areound so that they both are in the center ahead of the other couple. Mr UNlucky and his partner take a step forward before wheeling into the center and end up behind Mr Lucky.
