Week 15

Notes

What great support and enthusiasm. Danced 4 squares again last night. Thank you to all.

Moves this week - Jan 16

This week we learned a new formation: Ocean Wave (or more simply, a Wave). We introduced moves that let us work with waves:
- Swing Thru
- Boys Run
and caught up with another move:
- Wheel Around

There are Right Hand and Left Hand Waves. For now we're only concerned with Right Hand Waves. The term "Step to a Wave" means make a Right Hand Wave (the word "Wave" by default means a Right Hand Wave).

A wave is created from facing couples (eg, perhaps after a "Heads" Square Thru 4) to face the corner. Step forward and slightly left to touch RIGHT hands with the dancer in front of you -- hands are raised to shoulder level. The center dancers have two left hands that are then connected together to finish the wave (of 4 people). In this standard formation, the Boys are on the end of the wave and the Girls are in the middle. Arms should be extended slightly (not in close to the shoulders) so that a fly looking down from the ceiling would see an undulating wave of arms.

Swing Thru: Dancers first turn half by the right hand (ie, they Trade places) Then "those who can" turn half by the left hand. If you can't turn by the left, don't move ... stay where you are.

Boys Run : (Run will be described more fullly in a few weeks.) For now, after a Swing Thru , we have a wave with the boys now in the middle. Each Boy step forward and to the right in a semi-circle around the Girl to end up on the other side of the Girl and facing the same way as she is. As part of the definition of Run , the Girls have to slide sideways together, into the space vacated by the Boys. This ends in a two-faced line.

Wheel Around: Working as a couple (ie, maintaining hand contact with the partner), the Boy backs up while the Girl moves forward so that they both face the opposite direction as a couple. The pivot point for the turn is the hand hold between the dancers.
